A land of soaring mountains and yellow clay, encompassed by one of the world’s most stunning cliff-lined coasts, Mallorca is a summer destination to dream about. Whether you’re looking for a quiet mountain hideaway or sun-filled days by the water, this island has something for everyone. Here’s where we spent our time on this beautiful Balearic oasis.

Golden Hour  | Deià

Located in the island’s northwest corner, Deià is arguably Mallorca’s most tranquil and serene setting. Ochre-colored stone houses crowned by elegant Spanish tiles line the lower valley, stacked in an array of eclectic angles beneath the coastline’s soaring mountain peaks. Belmond La Residencia, a haven for the luxury-minded traveler, has hosted the likes of Princess Diana among countless guests of note, and proves itself reason enough to visit Deià. Savor Spanish wine amidst live piano music before dinner on the property’s lush terrace as the sun drifts behind the jutting rooftop silhouettes across town, plunging toward the misty Balearic Sea in a warm glow of magenta hues that slowly fade to night.

Swim  |  Cala S’Almunia

The trek to Cala S’Almunia isn’t for the faint of heart, or out of shape, but the reward is well worth the effort. About a two mile hike along the coast from the main road, ensconced in a jagged nest of orange rock you’ll find one of Mallorca’s best swimming holes. Dive into the sparkling turquoise waters from the surrounding cliffs like the locals and plant your beach towel on a private rock for a relaxing day in the sun. Make sure to bring your own provisions as you won’t find any bars or restaurants here.

Eat  |  Cala Figuera

The dining options aren’t endless in this quaint fishing village on the island’s southern coast, but the local catch proves to be some of Mallorca’s freshest. Order the paella and catch of the day at Restaurante L’Arcada for a sunset feast—or if you’re in town on the earlier side, grab an espresso and admire the bustling daily movements of the harbor below at Bon Bar.

Swim | Calo des Moro

While you won’t likely find a sunny spot to spend the day here due to the small, unorthodox shape of the “beach” carved into the hillside, it’s still a great spot to jump in for a quick dip on your way to nearby Cala S’Almunia. Not to mention it’s one of Mallorca’s most picturesque coves.

Hike | Cala Santayí

Cala Santayí is one of the busiest beaches on the southern coast, but it also offers an expansive swimming area that’s great for snorkeling, along with a plethora of dining options, making it ideal for those travelers who prefer to spend most of the day in one place. But the cove’s most striking feature is Es Pontàs, the natural rock arch that has served as inspiration for countless artists, and cliff jumpers, throughout Mallorca’s history.

Sun  |  Cala Llombards

While this cove tends to attract a more touristy crowd, it’s still much quainter than Cala Santayí or Cala Mondrago due to it’s smaller size. Plentiful beach chairs and a seaside bar offer a pleasant contrast to the harder to reach coves when you’re in the mood for a more pampered day by the sea.

What to Wear:

As you’ll likely be visiting during the warmer months, swimming trunks are your most prized possession, so bring several pairs. When you’re not at the water or soaking in the sun, stick to lightweight fabrics. I’d recommend packing lots of linen, seersucker and, of course, a pair of espadrilles. Better yet, buy some from a local artisan—Mallorca is famous for its handmade shoes.
