A Nautical Knit: The Cricket Sweater

The Cricket Sweater is knitwear royalty. Traced back to the tennis courts of the late 19th century, its style and appeal has endured for over a century. While there are many ways to wear it, I find the sweater particularly suitable as a spring layer when I’m on the coast. In addition to its distinct, nautical aesthetic, it also provides the right amount of warmth during the transitional weather—when the sea breeze is still brisk but no longer cold. This particular rendition was introduced by Ralph Lauren in 1972, and it speaks to the timeless nature of the silhouette that it’s still relevant today. One of the sweater’s best qualities is its versatility; it looks great with jeans, sweats, over a polo or even with swim trunks during the summer.
