Fortune Favors the Bold | Motto Wines
Winter in NYC means one thing: red wine season is in full swing. One of my favorite wine brands, Motto Wines, offers a new take on the traditional California red wine experience with a collection of distinctly dark, rich blends that deliver uncompromisingly bold flavor. The wine is aged with oak, adding texture and complexity, inside stainless steel tanks to retain freshness and varietal character. Separate wine lots through the aging process mean the final blends are determined right before bottling—once the wines have evolved to reveal all their true character and complexities. While perfect for pairing with traditional foods like cheese and charcuterie, Motto Wines are dark and bold enough to dance with your deepest indulgences. Here are a few ways I love to pair Motto when I've got a 'diet starts tomorrow' attitude.
Unabashed is a dark and complex Zinfandel with soft leathery aromas and hints of chocolate-covered raspberries. Its sweeter notes and hint of spice perfectly complement the saltiness of the bacon, rich egg yolk and creamy mozzerrella on my favorite brunch pizza.
Backbone is an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with delicate notes of ripe red plum, caramel and raspberries. It maintains subtle fruit flavors without being sweet, which is where the hibiscus, blood orange and passionfruit doughnuts come into play.
I'm a sucker for all things spicy, and it can be difficult to find a wine that is able to balance out the heat of something like buffalo sauce—but Gung Ho red blend does just that. Soft floral aromas and subtle hints of blueberry, pomegranate and jasmine tea mellow out even the spiciest foods. Pro tip: add onion rings to your next buffalo chicken sandwich. You won't regret it.
