Mixing Patterns: 101

Outerwear is king this time of year, and a sharp overcoat is essential. While navy and camel tend to dominate in popularity, an underrated yet equally versatile fabric option is glen plaid. Eye-catching, yet wearable with almost any color palette, it looks especially dapper cut in a double breasted silhouette like this customizable cashmere blend version from Indochino.
Mixing patterns isn’t something I do often, but given the right pieces the end result can be quite intriguing. In this case the contrasting houndstooth patterns provide a unique layering opportunity for the winter months. The navy jacket is unique enough to breath some life into the underlying monochromatic pieces yet subdued enough to allow the more pronounced plaid overcoat to be the focal point of the look. The main takeaway here is that when mixing patterns, it’s best that the pieces contrast not only in terms of color but also in how bold each piece is individually.
