Minimizing time spent in the car when on vacation is always a priority for me, but there are certain drives worth taking. Just 90 minutes northwest of my temporary abode in the beach-filled southern coast of Mallorca lies the mountain region and, most importantly, the town of Deià. Just the drive, however is an adventure in and of itself. Once past the island’s biggest city, Palma de Mallorca, the road begins to narrow and wind, weaving gut-wrenchingly close to rocky ledges that quickly turn into ravines leading steeply toward the coast hundreds of feet below. But as soon as the glowing chapels of Valledemossa reflecting the golden hour light come into view, you realize it was worth the journey, and you’ve almost arrived.
Artists from writers to painters and poets have called Deià home over the years, and it’s easy to see why. The streets are quiet, rolling mountains serene and food delicious, not to mention the water is a beckoningly close. After you’ve walked the streets of this small but inviting village, spend golden hour at Belmond La Residencia’s enchanting terrace for a pre-dinner cocktail accompanied by live piano and arguably the best sunset vantage point in town.
