What To Wear On A Coastal Vacation

Some inspiration for staying stylish during summer travels

There are so many reasons to be excited for a warm-weather vacation. Embracing new settings, cultures and cuisines or simply relaxing near the soothing ASMR of waves and seagulls are reason enough to book that next trip ASAP. But of course planning your wardrobe is also a fun and important part of traveling in order to look, and in turn feel, good in your new surroundings.

Vacation offers a uniquely pressure-free opportunity to experiment with your personal style. Not only is there less social pressure than at home (remember you probably won’t ever see your fellow resort-goers again after checkout) but a change in climate necessitates and change in fabrics and silhouettes. Wool suits, oxfords and jeans are replaced by linens, cottons and sandals. Trousers are cut with a fuller leg and jackets are unlined for breathability. The vibe is generally more casual on the coast and garments should be geared toward this sentiment.

Packing at least one suit is a no-brainer, and the less business-ey, the better. An unstructured linen suit is ideal. It’s easy to split into separates and will come in handy for those Michelin-star restaurant nights. A few linen button-downs will be easy to rotate through your daily looks and can be paired with everything from swim trunks at the beach club to your full suit. Generally no laces are required, meaning loafers, sandals and espadrilles will cover all your footwear needs. And for those slightly chillier nights a lightweight jacket like an unlined suede overshirt will be add some warmth and texture to the mix. Of course, planning the color palette around the blue hues of the ocean is always a good idea.
